Safety Surfacing for Outdoor Play Areas
Proper safety surfacing is critical to ensure that your outdoor play area is safe and accessible for children of all ages and abilities. There are a variety of safety surfaces that you can install beneath your playground that will provide a soft landing and prevent injury. While Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) has become standard practice for playground safety surfacing, there are other unitary surface options such as Poured-in-Place (PIP) that bring additional benefits. Parkreation offers a full range of safety surfacing options that meet all the required standards while also adding color and style to your play area!

Safety Surfacing FAQs
What is PIP?
Poured in Place (PIP) is a unitary safety surfacing that is used for playgrounds, water parks, dog parks, sportsandfitnessfacilities, and many diverse applications. Poured in Place is mixed and poured on-site in two layers using clean recycled rubber for the impact-absorbing cushion layer and recycled or virgin rubber manufactured specifically for the decorative wear layer.
It is a visually attractive, versatile, durable, and nonslip surfacing that minimizes the impact of falls to the surface and allows for ease of travel to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. With many colors available, Poured in Place rubber offers the designer of the area endless options to incorporate school colors and mascots, outlinegamesinto the surface, and create themes with intricately-designed murals.
How much does PIP cost?
There are several important factors that determine how much it costs to install poured-in-place rubber in your play area.
Size of Area: The cost per square foot will vary depending on quantity.
Critical Fall Height: Taller playground equipment requires more material.
Colors: Premium color options are offered at an additional cost.
Custom Designs: Wet seam graphics are a great way to add theme to your play space. Prices for graphics vary on size, colors, quantity and complexity.

What are the advantages of PIP safety surfacing?
Unitary surfacing such as poured-in-place rubber is a popular option for playgrounds and other outdoor play areas. Here are some of the advantages of using poured-in-place rubber surfacing on a playground:
Safety: Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is a safe option for playgrounds because it creates a cushioned surface that can help reduce the risk of injury from falls. It provides a stable and slip-resistant surface, which can help prevent accidents.
Durability: Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is durable and can last for many years with proper maintenance. It is resistant to wear and tear, weather, and other environmental factors, making it an ideal option for outdoor play areas.
Customizable: Poured-in-place rubber surfacing can be customized to fit any playground layout or design. It comes in a variety of colors, textures, and thicknesses, allowing for a unique and aesthetically pleasing play area.
Accessibility: Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is accessible to children with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs or mobility devices. It provides a smooth surface that allows for easy movement.
What is EWF
Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) is an economical playground surfacing that is used on the majority of playgrounds in the United States. It has high impact absorbing qualities that when properly installed also offers a firm, slip resistant surface that meets accessibility guidelines.
Made of processed wood that is ground to a fibrous consistency randomly sized typically to not over 2 in length, Engineered Wood Fiber is typically free of hazardous substances and twig and leaf material.Unlike wood mulch, EWF is made from the wood inside the tree, not using the bark. The small fiber pieces do not have sharp edges and splinters are not a problem. The natural wood is engineered to knit together and form a surface soft enough to cushion falls and also firm enough for wheelchairs to navigate the playground.
What are the disadvantages of EWF safety surfacing?
Engineered wood fiber (EWF) is a popular option for playground safety surfaces, but it also has some disadvantages to consider.
Maintenance: EWF requires regular maintenance to keep it clean and free of debris. It may require occasional topping up to maintain the desired depth for safety purposes.
Weathering: EWF can be susceptible to weathering and can deteriorate over time due to exposure to the elements, particularly heavy rainfall and wind.
Attraction of Pests: EWF can attract pests such as insects and rodents, particularly if the wood fibers are not treated with the appropriate chemicals.
Depth: EWF requires a specific depth to ensure safety, which can be challenging to maintain over time, especially in high-use areas.
